Custom website or Wix: a site builder or a site built for you
A custom website or Wix? Site builders such as Wix and Squarespace, and ready-made WordPress themes, let you have a site quickly and without a developer. A site built to order takes more effort at the start, but it is made exactly for your business. Here we compare the two paths honestly: when a site builder is genuinely enough, when it falls short, who owns the site, how speed and Google compare, and what happens to the enquiries that come in through the form.
Start with your business.
Custom website or Wix: the short answer
If you need a business card on the web, with an address, a phone number, your services and a few photos, a site builder is often the sensible choice. You will have it quickly and can change the text yourself.
If the site has to do work, such as bringing in enquiries that go straight into your CRM, taking bookings, running in two languages or connecting to your other systems, a builder starts to hold you back. Then a site built to order is usually the better path.
What site builders are
"Wix or WordPress" is the common question, but the two are different things. What they share is that you start from a ready-made template, not a blank page.
- Wix and Squarespace You pick a template, move blocks around with the mouse, and the platform keeps the site on its own servers. You pay a subscription. It is convenient, but the site lives inside the platform and follows its rules.
- WordPress with a ready-made theme Free software you install on your own hosting. The theme sets the look, plugins add features. You get more freedom, but also more responsibility: updates, security, plugins that stop being maintained.
- A site built to order The design and the code are made for your business. The site contains only what it needs and can connect to any system that offers a way to connect.
When a site builder is genuinely enough
- A new business You are still testing what you sell and to whom. A site builder gives you a presence while the idea takes shape.
- A business card A few pages with services, contact details and photos, with no link to other systems.
- You want to edit it yourself Site builders are made for that. If someone on the team likes changing photos and text, they will manage.
- Few enquiries If enquiries come in a few a month and arrive by email without trouble, you do not need more.
A point-by-point comparison
- Ownership With Wix and Squarespace the site sits in the platform and usually cannot be moved elsewhere unchanged. With a site built to order, agree in writing that the code, the domain and the content are yours.
- Speed Site builders load code for many features you may not use, and that often shows on a phone. A well-built custom site loads only what it needs.
- Visibility on Google Both can be found. Site builders give you the basic settings. With a site built to order you have full control over the structure, the addresses, the two languages and the data Google reads.
- Connections to systems Site builders have their own apps and forms. Whether they connect to your CRM or booking program depends on the platform, sometimes for an extra subscription. A site built to order connects directly.
- Forms and enquiries With a site builder the form usually sends an email. With a site built to order an enquiry can go into your CRM, reach the right person and stay on record even if the email gets lost.
- How you pay A site builder is a monthly subscription that grows with the plan and the add-on apps. A site built to order is a build, then hosting and maintenance.
- Maintenance With Wix and Squarespace the platform updates everything. With WordPress someone has to update the theme and the plugins regularly. With a site built to order, ask in advance who maintains it and how.
When a site built to order is worth it
- The site has to bring in customers Enquiries are an important part of the business, and every lost enquiry is felt.
- Links to other systems The form has to write into your CRM, calendar or ordering program, without anyone retyping.
- Two languages You have customers who search in English, and you want both versions to be found on Google.
- The site will grow Tomorrow you may need online booking, a client portal or a calculator. A site built to order can be extended without starting over.
What to ask before you choose
- Whose is the domain? The domain should be registered in your name, whoever builds the site.
- Can I take the site with me? If you change platform or provider, what exactly do you take with you?
- Where do the enquiries go? Only to one inbox, or also into a system where they will not get lost?
- What will I pay after a year? Subscription, apps, hosting, maintenance. Ask for the full picture in writing, not just the first amount.

Frequently asked questions about site builders or custom sites
Can I start with Wix and move to a custom site later?
Yes. The text, the photos and the domain move across, and the design and structure are made anew. Redirect the old addresses to the new ones so you do not lose what Google already knows.
Is WordPress a site builder?
Not quite. WordPress is free software you install on your own hosting. With a ready-made theme it works almost like a site builder, but maintenance and security are up to you.
Does a custom site rank better on Google?
Not by itself. Ranking depends mostly on content, speed and structure. A site built to order gives you full control over those things, but the good text still has to be written.
Will I be able to change the text on a custom site myself?
It depends on how it is built. Agree on it in advance: which parts you will edit yourself and which go through the provider.
